MyST – Caerphilly Residential Model

What is MyST?

MyST, an abbreviation of “My Support Team”, is a clinical mental health service that aims to support young people with complex mental health needs to live within their local communities. The first MyST service was established in 2004 in Torfaen and has since expanded to have locality teams in Caerphilly, Blaenau-Gwent, Monmouthshire, and Newport. A MyST team not only provides support to a young person but also to their whole system – including families, foster carers, schools, social workers, and any other relevant individuals involved in the young person’s life. Young people can access a range of therapeutic interventions from their MyST teams, and the service offers long term psychologically informed systemic interventions.

What is the Residential MyST Service?

The Residential MyST Service is unique to Caerphilly and was established in late 2020. The aim of the Residential MyST Service was to develop a therapeutic residential model in collaboration with the already established residential homes in Caerphilly. At its core, our model aims to improve young people’s development to offer them the greatest chance of living a happy, healthy, and aspirational adult life. Our model supports young people to remain in their local communities where possible and seeks to prevent young people with complex mental health needs experiencing numerous placement disruptions that may involve a transition to a placement some distance away from their local community.
